The stories, in this her first published book, are an attempt to give some understanding of rural communities and their inhabitants during the 1930’s. All the stories revolve around the writer and her family. There is particular attention paid to Ukrainians and especially women of that time and place.

The Chicken Man is a story of a lonely prairie farmer who comes to realize that all his dreams and aspirations have come to nought. The only dream he has left, is to be with his wife Elizabeth, who died when she was young. The only land worth farming is that on which he grows tomatoes. The story is about the last days of John Babich.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Gloria Kupchenko was born on 27 August 1926, in Vegreville, County of Minburn No. 27, Alberta, Canada, her father, Volodymyr Kupchenko, was 28 and her mother, Anna Perich, was 23. She had at least 1 son and 1 daughter with Stanley Frolick. She died in 1993, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 67.
