Trolltek 12V DC Voltage Converters

The Trolltek™ DC voltage convertor can be used to power a 24V or 36V trolling motor directly from a 12V battery. These converters are ideal for onboard marine installations in harsh salt water environments. Each unit is waterproof, dustproof and shockproof ensuring they withstand the harsh marine environment.

Utilizing a voltage converter means there’s no need for a dedicated 24V or 36V battery and instead the trolling motor can be powered from the existing 12V house or crank batteries.

The negatives to using a converter is a slight loss in efficiency with up to 4% of the power lost as heat through the converter. Additionally, users must be careful not to drain their house or crank batteries as trolling motors can draw considerable amounts of power.

Trolltek™ converters are waterproof and shockproof making them well suited to the marine environment where boat slap and pounding from waves can be common. The internal electronics are epoxy potted and housed inside a Aluminium casing to achieve a robust and stable design.

Trolltek™ converters can be mounted in any orientation making them great for boat installations. There is no reliance on fans for cooling increasing reliability.

Installation Design Considerations

Up to 4% of the power draw from Trolltek™ converters can be shed as heat and users should take this into consideration with their installations. A air gap must be maintained around the converter to prevent reaching the over-temperature protection state.

Wire gauge is also vital when installing a converter and should not be overlooked. For example, if using a 36V trolling motor that can draw ~40A@36V, the 12V input to the converter could reach as much as 150A. Wire sizing is of key importance with this amount of power draw over an extended period.
