What is a weed mat for planting trees?

Weed mats are objects (usually a fabric) that are placed around the surrounding area of your tree with the purpose of preventing weeds from forming. This allows the tree’s roots to grow out along the surface of the soil without having to compete for nutrients and sunlight from weeds. Weed mats for trees have an opening in the middle of the fabric, so the tree can receive sunlight but not the surrounding area.

How long does weed mat last?

This will vary depending on the manufacturer. Sandbaggy weed mats for trees are made from woven polypropylene and are uv stabilized. Thus, our weed mats can last 2-3 years if left under direct sunlight and up to 10 years if covered in 3-4” of mulch or gravel.

To ensure a weed mat’s longevity make sure you get a weed mat that is both uv stabilized and is made from woven material, which is more durable than non woven material.

Do you put soil on top of weed mat?

Yes you can put soil, mulch, or gravel over these tree mats and it will drastically extend the life of the mat.
